Shri Datun Sahib:
When Guru Nanak Dev Ji visited Leh in the year 1517 while on his third world awakening and missionary holy tour (Udasi: 1514 – 18), Leh was devoid of any greenery at that time as it had no trees. Guru Nanak blessed the city with greenery by planting a miswak tree. This sacred tree has come to be known as Shri Datun Sahib.
Guru Nanak Dev is well respected by Tibetan Buddhists who consider him a saint and venerate him as Guru Gompka Maharaj and as Nanak Lama.
Shri Datun Sahib is located behind the Jamia Masjid in the main bazaar in Leh city. Considered to be sacred by the city's residents, regardless of their religion, this tree was the first tree to grow in this area. This sacred tree remains to remind us the real aim of the Guru – to establish greenery not only in the desert area but in the hearts of all human beings and to spread the message of truth, peace and love all around.
